Getting Groceries to Your Villa on the East Coast of Mallorca
The east coast is well covered for supermarkets once you are in one of the main towns, but the coves and the rural fincas inland sit a drive from them, and almost everyone needs a hire car to shop. The same goes whether you are in a villa, a finca or an apartment in one of the resorts. This is a quick guide to where the shops are around Manacor, Porto Cristo, Cala Millor, Capdepera and Cala Ratjada, when they open, and how to skip the first-day run by having a pack waiting at the villa.
The short version
| If you are staying in | Your nearest real supermarket | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Manacor | Mercadona, Lidl and Eroski in town | The biggest choice in the area; a petrol-station shop opens 24h |
| Porto Cristo | Eroski in the village | One of the few that tends to open on Sundays |
| Cala Millor and Sa Coma | Eroski, Mercadona, Lidl and Aldi; a Carrefour over in Sa Coma | Very well covered for a resort |
| Son Servera | Eroski and Mercadona | Short hop from Cala Millor |
| Cala Ratjada and Capdepera | Eroski, Mercadona and Lidl | Good choice in the resort itself |
| Canyamel and the coves | Small local shops; drive to Capdepera or Cala Millor | Lovely and quiet, which means no big shop nearby |
| Rural fincas inland | Whichever town is closest, usually Manacor or Artà | Budget time for the lanes; do one big shop on arrival |
Manacor and Porto Cristo
Manacor is the main town for this side of the island and has a Mercadona, a Lidl and an Eroski, which between them cover anything you need for a week. If you arrive very late, the Repsol petrol station in Manacor has a small shop open around the clock for the basics. Down on the coast, Porto Cristo has its own Eroski, which is handy because it is one of the shops in the area that usually opens on a Sunday.
Local tip: if your villa is one of the rural fincas between Manacor and the coast, the drive in is longer than the map suggests on the small roads. Plan one proper shop rather than several short trips.
Cala Millor, Sa Coma and Son Servera
Cala Millor is one of the better-stocked resorts on the island. You will find an Eroski near the beach, plus a Mercadona, a Lidl, an Aldi and a Hiper Centro in the centre. Just along the coast in Sa Coma there is a Carrefour hypermarket if you want everything under one roof, and Son Servera, a few minutes inland, has its own Eroski and Mercadona. Wherever you are on this stretch, a full shop is close.
Local tip: the seafront Spar shops are fine for a forgotten carton of milk but price for convenience. For the main shop, the Mercadona or Eroski works out a lot cheaper.
Cala Ratjada, Capdepera and Canyamel
Up at the northeast tip, Cala Ratjada has an Eroski, a Mercadona and a Lidl, so the resort itself is well served. Capdepera, just inland, is a short drive. Canyamel and the smaller coves are quieter and rely on small local shops, so for a proper trolley you head to Capdepera or Cala Millor. If you have chosen somewhere this peaceful, that drive on arrival day is exactly what most people would rather skip.
Opening hours and Sundays
The bigger supermarkets here generally open Monday to Saturday from around 9am into the evening. Sundays vary by town: in the season many tourist-area shops open on Sunday mornings into the early afternoon, and Cala Millor and Porto Cristo tend to be reliable for this, while the Lidl in Manacor usually stays shut on Sundays. Hours shift between high season and the quieter months, so check your nearest branch if you are arriving on a Sunday.
The easier option: have it delivered
This is what Prep'd does. We do the shop and time the delivery to your arrival, so the kitchen is stocked when you walk in, with your drinks chilled to your preference and ready to open after the journey. Where the property gives us access before check-in, we put everything inside and get the perishables into the fridge, so it is all waiting before you arrive. You just tell us your arrival time and what you would like chilled. The Essential covers breakfast and kitchen basics, The Sunrise is a week of breakfast for two, and there are packs for the beach and for the wine on the terrace. If you would rather choose the items yourself, Build Your Own lets you put together your own order instead of taking a fixed pack, with a €50 minimum and no limit on how much you add. It is the most popular option. You can see everything on the shop page.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the nearest supermarket to a villa in Porto Cristo?
Porto Cristo has its own Eroski in the village, which is also one of the shops on this coast that usually opens on Sundays. For a bigger choice, Manacor is about fifteen minutes inland with a Mercadona, a Lidl and an Eroski.
Is there a supermarket in Cala Ratjada?
Yes. Cala Ratjada has an Eroski, a Mercadona and a Lidl, so the resort is well covered. Capdepera, just inland, is a short drive if you want another option.
Can I get groceries delivered to a rural finca on the east coast?
Yes. Prep'd times delivery to your arrival, with your drinks chilled to your preference. Where the property allows access before check-in, we put everything inside and into the fridge, so it is waiting when you walk in.
Are the supermarkets open on Sundays?
Some are. In the season, tourist-area shops like those in Cala Millor and Porto Cristo often open on Sunday mornings, while the Lidl in Manacor usually closes. Check your nearest branch if you are arriving on a Sunday.
What should I have waiting at the villa for the first morning?
Breakfast, coffee, milk and water are the things worth having ready before you arrive. Prep'd's Essential pack covers exactly that, and The Beach pack is a nice extra for a coastal stay.
Do you only deliver to villas, or to fincas and apartments too?
Any holiday rental. Villas, fincas, apartments, townhouses and holiday homes booked through Airbnb, Booking.com, Vrbo or an agency are all the same to us. Rural fincas are some of our most common deliveries, because they are usually furthest from a supermarket.
