Is Anything Open on a Sunday in Mallorca? A Villa Guest's Guide
Most of the large supermarkets in Mallorca close on Sundays, but plenty of tourist-area shops open on Sunday mornings in the summer, so the answer is "some things, if you know where to look." If you are arriving on a Sunday, the safe move is to have food sorted before you land. This is a quick guide to what opens, what does not, and how the season changes things.
The short version
| Type of shop | Sundays in summer | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Big supermarkets in tourist areas | Often open mornings, roughly 9am to 2pm | Varies by branch; some close all day |
| Big supermarkets in Palma | Usually closed | The city follows normal Sunday closing |
| Small Spar and convenience shops | Often open, sometimes all day | Handy but pricier than the supermarkets |
| Some Aldi branches | A few open, like Inca, Palmanova and Magaluf | Most Aldi and Lidl stay shut on Sundays |
| Petrol-station shops | Many open, some 24 hours | Basics only, but a lifesaver late or on a Sunday |
Which shops open on Sundays
As a rule, the big chains, Mercadona, Eroski, Lidl and Aldi, close on Sundays, with exceptions in the tourist areas where certain branches are allowed to open. In practice that means many resort supermarkets open on Sunday mornings into the early afternoon during the season, while the same chain's branch in a working town or in Palma stays shut. The small Spar and similar convenience shops in holiday areas are often open on Sundays, frequently from around 9am to 2pm, and a handful of Aldi branches such as Inca, Palmanova and Magaluf open too.
Local tip: do not assume a chain is open just because you have seen that chain open on a Sunday elsewhere. It comes down to the individual branch, so check the one nearest your villa.
Summer versus the quieter months
Sunday opening is far more generous in the high season, roughly June to September, when the resorts are busy and shops want the trade. In the shoulder and winter months, many of those same shops go back to closing on Sundays. So a villa that has a handy Sunday-morning supermarket in August may find everything shut on a Sunday in April or October.
Public holidays, when everything shuts
There are also national and local public holidays when almost everything closes, including the big tourist-area shops that would normally open. These include New Year's Day, Epiphany on the sixth of January, and a run of dates through the year. If your arrival falls on one of these, treat it like the strictest Sunday and plan ahead.
Arriving on a Sunday
This is where people get caught out. A flight that lands on a Sunday afternoon or evening, plus a transfer to a rural finca or a mountain villa, can easily mean every useful shop is shut by the time you arrive. Even where a resort supermarket opens on Sunday morning, it may well have closed before you reach it. If you are arriving on a Sunday, the simplest plan is to not rely on shopping that day at all.
The easier option: have it delivered
This is what Prep'd does, and Sundays are exactly when it earns its keep. We do the shop and time the delivery to your arrival, whatever day that falls on, with your drinks chilled to your preference and no hunting for an open shop. Where the property gives us access before check-in, we put everything inside and into the fridge, so it is all waiting before you arrive. You just tell us your arrival time and what you would like chilled. The Essential covers breakfast and kitchen basics, and The Sunrise is a week of breakfast for two. If you would rather choose the items yourself, Build Your Own lets you put together your own order instead of taking a fixed pack, with a €50 minimum and no limit on how much you add. It is the most popular option. You can see everything on the shop page.
Frequently asked questions
Are supermarkets open on Sundays in Mallorca?
Most large supermarkets close on Sundays, but many tourist-area branches open on Sunday mornings in the summer, roughly 9am to 2pm. Small Spar and convenience shops in holiday areas are often open too.
What about Palma?
The big supermarkets in Palma generally follow normal Sunday closing and stay shut. The Sunday opening you find in the resorts does not usually apply in the city.
Is Sunday shopping different in summer?
Yes. Sunday opening is much more generous from around June to September. In the quieter months many of the same shops close on Sundays again.
We land late on a Sunday, what do we do?
Late on a Sunday, your realistic options are a petrol-station shop or a small convenience store, if anything at all near a rural villa. The simplest plan is to have food waiting at the villa rather than relying on finding somewhere open.
Can I get a delivery on a Sunday check-in?
Yes. We time delivery to your arrival whatever day it falls on, with your drinks chilled, so a Sunday arrival is covered without you needing to find an open shop.
Do you only deliver to villas, or to fincas and apartments too?
Any holiday rental. Villas, fincas, apartments, townhouses and holiday homes booked through Airbnb, Booking.com, Vrbo or an agency are all the same to us. Rural fincas are some of our most common deliveries, because they are usually furthest from a supermarket.
